Supreme Court Term Limits Amendment
Official: Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to provide for term limits for justices of the Supreme Court.
Proposes a constitutional amendment that ends lifetime tenure for Supreme Court justices and replaces it with an 18-year cap. Sitting justices already past that mark would have their terms ended on the date the amendment is ratified.
1. Sets a hard 18-year maximum for every Supreme Court justice, replacing the current lifetime appointment. 2. Applies retroactively: any justice already serving 18 or more years at the moment of ratification would have their term ended that day. 3. If a Chief Justice is removed under this rule, the vacancy is filled through existing succession law rather than a special procedure.
Sitting Supreme Court justices with long tenures, future presidents who would gain a predictable nomination cycle, and the Senate confirmation process.
