Tree Nuts for Seniors' Nutrition Program
Official: Farmers’ Market Expansion Act of 2025
This bill allows seniors to purchase tree nuts with their nutrition benefits at farmers' markets, expanding their food options.
Farmers’ Market Expansion Act of 2025This bill includes tree nuts (including shelled tree nuts) as one of the eligible foods under the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP). The Department of Agriculture's SFMNP provides grants to participating states to provide low-income seniors with coupons/vouchers that may be used at farmers’ markets, roadside stands, and community supported agriculture programs to purchase eligible foods (i. e., fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally-grown fruits, vegetables, honey, and herbs).
1. This bill adds tree nuts to the list of eligible foods in the seniors farmers' market nutrition program. 2. Seniors can use their nutrition benefits to buy tree nuts, including shelled varieties, at farmers' markets. 3. The change aims to improve the variety of healthy food options available to seniors. 4. Farmers' markets will be able to sell more products, potentially increasing their sales.
Seniors who participate in the farmers' market nutrition program will benefit from this change.
