Gives Temporary Protection to Haitians
Official: To require the Secretary of Homeland Security to designate Haiti for temporary protected status.
This bill requires the Secretary of Homeland Security to grant temporary protected status to Haitians living in the United States. This status protects them from being deported back to Haiti for a set period.
This bill directs the Department of Homeland Security to designate Haiti for temporary protected status (TPS) for 18 months beginning August 3, 2025. (Eligible nationals of a TPS-designated country may obtain employment authorization, may not be detained on the basis of their immigration status, and are not subject to removal while they retain TPS.)
1. This bill allows Haitians living in the U.S. to stay temporarily due to unsafe conditions in Haiti. 2. The protection lasts until three months after January 20, 2029. 3. Haitians who qualify will not face deportation during this period. 4. This action responds to ongoing crises in Haiti, including political instability and natural disasters.
This bill affects Haitians currently residing in the United States who may face danger if returned to Haiti.
