Why This Matters

This bill changes how the United States admits and resettles refugees by giving Congress and states more control over the process. It ensures that both the federal government and state leaders have a say in refugee admissions.

If you live in a state, your governor can prevent refugees from being resettled there.

What changes is this bill making?
  1. 1The President must recommend the number of refugees allowed each year before the fiscal year starts.
  2. 2Congress must pass a resolution to set the refugee admission cap for that year.
  3. 3States can reject the resettlement of refugees if their chief executive communicates opposition.
  4. 4States will be notified 30 days before any refugee is resettled in their area.
  5. 5No refugees can be placed in a state that does not agree to their resettlement.
