Born and raised on a small family farm in Nambé, New Mexico, by a union ironworker and a public school employee, Ben Ray Luján learned the values of hard work and community service from a young age.
Ben Ray has dedicated his career to improving the lives of those in his community and his state, fighting to create good-paying jobs for hardworking New Mexican women and men, increasing access to quality, affordable health care, and protecting New Mexico’s natural resources.
In 2018, Ben Ray successfully chaired the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, leading the Democratic effort to take back the majority in the U.S. House while electing the most diverse and youngest Congress in history. This majority was critical to holding the first Trump administration accountable.

Today, Ben Ray proudly represents New Mexico in the U.S. Senate, where he works every day to lower costs, strengthen public safety, protect food assistance and affordable health care, expand broadband, and invest in New Mexico’s future. Building on his years of service in the U.S. House, Ben Ray continues to fight for working families, rural and Tribal communities, and local economies across our state.
When New Mexicans elected him to the Senate, Ben Ray became the first Head Start graduate ever elected to the chamber and the first Hispanic to represent New Mexico in the U.S. Senate in more than 40 years.
In the Senate, Ben Ray holds critical leadership positions, ensuring New Mexico has a seat at the table in decisions that impact our communities. His work has helped deliver billions of dollars in investments to New Mexico and expand opportunity across all 33 counties.
Ben Ray has been a leading voice holding Donald Trump and his administration accountable. He is also fighting back against costly tariffs that drive up prices for families, standing up for workers and unions, and working to preserve New Mexico’s public lands and environment for future generations.
In his downtime, Ben Ray enjoys mountain biking and working on the family farm. He continues to live in Nambé, where his family has lived for generations.

Key powers include confirming presidential appointments, ratifying treaties, serving on committees, shaping the federal budget, and conducting impeachment trials. Each senator serves a six-year term and represents their entire state.
