Kevin’s Story
Kevin Cramer is a native North Dakotan, raised in Kindred, where he went to primary and secondary school. He earned his bachelor degree from Concordia College and his master's degree in Management from the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND.
Kevin and his wife are blessed with a large and loving family that provides the unwavering support and love that fuel his passion for service. They have two adult sons, Ian and Isaac, two adult daughters, Rachel and Annie, and one teenage son, Abel. Their family grew to include six grandchildren: Lyla, Beau, Nico, Chet, Willa, and Eve. Tragically, Isaac passed away in March 2018, impacting their lives and underscoring the importance of family bonds.
Kevin is inspired by his family to keep the American Dream alive and safeguard our country’s future. After dedicating himself to three terms as North Dakota's sole Representative in the U.S. House, Kevin Cramer was elected to represent North Dakota in the U.S. Senate in November 2018. In an impressive victory, he overcame a $25 million spending disadvantage to defeat incumbent Heidi Heitkamp, earning 55% of the vote to her 44%. Kevin won a second term in 2024 when he defeated opponent Katrina Christiansen in her second attempt to gain a Senate seat, 66.5% to 33.5%.
In the Senate, Kevin contributes his expertise and passion to four influential committees: Armed Services, Environment and Public Works, Veterans’ Affairs, and Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs. He also does weekly radio town halls to express his vision for America. He is committed to making a lasting impact on the issues that matter most.
Throughout his time representing North Dakotans, Kevin has been guided by his constituents, making outreach and interaction with the public his utmost priority. He cherishes these moments as the essence of public service, understanding that connecting with people personally is the key to effective representation. During his time as a U.S. Representative, Kevin held more town halls than any other member of Congress — an extraordinary testament to his dedication to open dialogue and understanding the concerns of the people he serves.
Kevin Cramer’s distinguished career in public service goes back to 1991 when he became the youngest elected Chairman of the North Dakota Republican Party. From 1993 to 2000, he took on crucial roles in Governor Ed Schafer's cabinet, first as State Tourism Director and later as State Economic Development & Finance Director. His commitment to fostering leadership and community growth continued as he served as Executive Director of the Harold Schafer Leadership Foundation from 2000 to 2003 — a program dedicated to nurturing future leaders from the University of Mary in Bismarck, connecting them with prominent business figures in the community.
Kevin’s influence in North Dakota grew after he was appointed to the Public Service Commission in 2003 by then-Governor John Hoeven, eventually leading to his election in 2004 and re-election in 2010. Kevin oversaw North Dakota's thriving economy, ensuring some of the nation's lowest utility rates and strengthening the state's competitive position in the global marketplace. With his expertise in energy policy, he recognizes the crucial link between America's energy security and the nation's overall economic well-being.
An unwavering champion of the free market system, Kevin’s record speaks volumes about his commitment to fiscal responsibility. Throughout his career, he consistently seeks to cut and balance budgets while promoting the private sector through thoughtful, sensible regulations and limited government intervention.
Beyond his illustrious career, Kevin’s dedication to personal growth is evident in his academic achievements. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia College and a master's degree in Management from the esteemed University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota. Recognizing his exceptional leadership qualities, the University of Mary bestowed upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Leadership on May 4, 2013.
