The Lieutenant Governor is the second-highest executive officer in the state. Responsibilities include presiding over the state senate, casting tie-breaking votes, and assuming the governorship if the office becomes vacant. In many states the Lieutenant Governor also takes on policy portfolios assigned by the Governor.
