Meet Christian Vukasovich
Born and raised in Michigan, Christian's values are rooted in his experience where hard work is valued, and communities take care of one another. A son of an immigrant family on his father's side that came to America to build a better life, and descended from a long line of Michigan ministers on his mother's side, Christian was raised to believe in faith, fairness, and service to others. He worked his way through school as a bricklayer, learning the value of an honest day's work.
Christian is a husband, a father, and a teacher. He has dedicated his career to helping students build brighter futures for themselves and their families. As a union organizer, he has experience standing shoulder to shoulder with workers fighting for fair wages, dignity, and respect.
Christian believes that Washington should work for working people. Congress needs a strong voice fighting to keep the American Dream alive for every man, woman, and child.
Christian A. Vukasovich is an educator, labor organizer, researcher, and community leader running for the U.S. House in Michigan’s 5th Congressional District. Born and raised in Michigan, Christian knows what it means to work hard, raise a family, and make every dollar count. He also knows that for too many families across southern Michigan, hard work alone is no longer enough to get ahead.
Christian’s own path was built on that kind of hard work. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Eastern Michigan University while working as a seasonal bricklayer and substitute teacher in Romulus, Michigan. He later taught while pursuing graduate studies at Concordia University in Ann Arbor, supporting his family while building a career in education. He and his wife Tamara did the math at the kitchen table. Rent, groceries, the utilities bills, the insurance payment, and which one could wait a week.
That experience never left him. It shaped the way Christian sees the world—and the kind of public servant he wants to be. He understands that behind every policy debate are real families making difficult choices, working extra hours, raising children, caring for parents, and wondering whether the paycheck will stretch far enough.
Christian went on to earn his Ph.D. in Media and Communication from Bowling Green State University and spent nearly two decades teaching at universities in Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, and Maine. He worked with traditional students, working adults, veterans, and other nontraditional learners. As a union organizer with the American Association of University Professors, and as a member of the National Education Association, he advocated for workplace dignity, fair treatment, and the rights of educators and working people.
Christian knows how to work with lawmakers, advancing fair and practical policies that bring people together to solve problems—changes that can lead to real improvements in everyday lives and new opportunities through good education, useful job skills training, and investment in people. He believes progress comes from finding common ground, doing the hard work of solving problems, and measuring success by whether people's lives actually get better.
Running for Michigan's 5th District US House Seat
As an educator and researcher, Christian developed expertise in communication, media, and the ways institutions shape public understanding. His internationally recognized research has examined media systems, crisis communication, war and security, propaganda, and global information networks. His work has included competitive international research programs, including a scholarly exchange in Tunisia and a research fellowship examining media and conflict communication across Palestine’s West Bank and Israel.
But Christian’s work has never been confined to the classroom. He has provided communications advice, volunteer leadership, and strategic support to more than 50 community organizations and neighborhood groups. He currently serves on the board of the Karst Aquifer Coalition of Southern Monroe County, working to protect local drinking water, family farms, and municipal water supplies from corporate contamination.
Those experiences have given Christian a distinctive perspective: he understands both the challenges facing working families and the institutions that are supposed to serve them. He knows how to take complicated issues, cut through the noise, and explain what is actually at stake. And he believes government should work for the people who pay the bills—not just the people with the biggest checkbooks or the best connections.
Christian isn’t here to tell southern Michigan what’s wrong with it. He did that math at his own kitchen table for years, and he knows how many people around here are doing it tonight. He thinks this place can do a lot better than it’s been allowed to.
That is why Christian is running for U.S. Congress in Michigan's 5th District: not to tell southern Michigan what it should be, but to help build a future in which the people who work hard, raise families, serve their communities, and play by the rules have a government that works just as hard for them. His priorities are clear:
Restore economic prosperity and opportunity to working families.
Protect affordable healthcare.
Build a strong educational system that values skill-based training.
Create an environment that supports affordable housing.
Protect the Constitutional rights and freedoms of every American.
Put people first, not corporate or billionaire interests.
Christian believes that the people of Michigan's 5th District deserve a representative who listens, leads with integrity, and never forgets his Michigan roots.
It is time for Congress to work as hard as the people it serves.
Members of the U.S. House of Representatives write and vote on federal laws, including the federal budget. Each represents one district and serves a two-year term. Tax bills must start in the House, only the House can impeach federal officials, and members oversee federal agencies through their committees.
