Biography
Maryam Khan was elected during a 2022 special election in March to represent the 5th District, serving Hartford and Windsor, and is the first Muslim member of the Connecticut House, a historic triumph. In November 2022, she was re-elected to serve her first full legislative term which now includes South Windsor.
Rep. Khan currently serves as the House Chair of the Select Committee on Special Education and as a member of the Appropriations, Education, and Judiciary Committees.
In the 2025 legislative session, Rep. Khan led passage of a bill that provides historic investment in special education, makes historic investments for students in special education, delivers better access to services, and provides cost controls and greater transparency.
For the 2023 legislative session, Rep. Khan served as Vice Chair of the Housing Committee for the 2023 legislative session and as member of the of the Aging, Education, and Judiciary Committees.
In 2023, Rep. Khan was appointed Chairperson of the Building Educational Responsibility with Greater Improvement Networks Commission. The commission serves to study various educational issues including funding for local school districts, charter schools, magnet schools, and related accountability measures.
Rep. Khan has also advocated for a number of bills on victim safety and protections including Public Act 24-15 - An Act Concerning the Use of Police Body-Worn Recording Equipment , which unanimously passed the House of Representatives and Senate and was signed into law by Governor Ned Lamont.
State representatives serve in their state's lower legislative chamber. State legislation covers areas like education, healthcare, transportation, criminal justice, and local taxation that directly affect residents' daily lives.
