About Rand

Before Dr. Rand Paul ever set foot in Washington, he spent nearly two decades restoring people’s sight, one patient at a time. That commitment to principled, practical service is what defines him, whether he’s in the operating room or on the Senate floor.

Elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010, Rand Paul has been an outspoken champion for constitutional liberties, fiscal responsibility, and limited government. As one of the Senate’s most consistent voices against government overreach, Rand has fought to hold Washington accountable, pushing to audit the Federal Reserve, protect civil liberties, and rein in reckless federal spending. He didn’t come to Washington to go along to get along. He came to make a difference.

Physician. Husband. Father.

Rand grew up in Lake Jackson, Texas, the third of five children born to Carol and Ron Paul. He attended Baylor University, graduated from the Duke University School of Medicine in 1988, completed a surgical internship at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta, and finished his ophthalmology residency at Duke University Medical Center. In 1993, he and his wife, Kelley, moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky, where Rand built his ophthalmology practice and put down roots.

For 18 years, Rand ran his own practice in Bowling Green, building connections as a working physician serving his community. A large focus of his practice was preserving the vision of Kentucky seniors, work that earned him recognition from The Twilight Wish Foundation in 2002 for Outstanding Service and Commitment to Seniors.

Rand and Kelley have been married for over 35 years. They are devout Christians, active in their local church, and have raised three sons together: William, Duncan, and Robert.

Giving Back Through Medicine

In 1995, Rand founded the Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Clinic, providing free eye exams and surgery to families and individuals in need. As a 17-year member of Lions Clubs International — an organization dedicated to preserving sight for the less fortunate around the world — Rand has received many of the organization’s highest commendations for his sustained commitment to vision care.

That commitment continues today. Rand regularly performs pro-bono eye surgeries across Kentucky and provides free surgery to children through the Children of the Americas Program. Most recently, he traveled to Guatemala with the University of Utah’s Moran Eye Center, where a medical team restored the vision of more than 200 patients, many of whom were blind due to cataracts.

A Doctor in the Senate

Rand Paul came to Washington for the same reason he became a doctor: to diagnose real problems and deliver real solutions. In a Senate full of career politicians, he remains what he has always been: a physician, a neighbor, and a principled fighter for the freedom of every American.
