Meet Marilyn

It is my honor to serve Washington State’s 10th Congressional District.

Born in Seoul and raised in Tacoma, Washington, I’m a proud Army brat and graduate of Tacoma Public Schools, the University of Washington, and Clark Atlanta University, where I earned my MBA.

As the first African-American and Korean-American woman elected to Congress. I’m honored to be the first, but will not be the last.

My public service journey started in local government where I served two terms as Mayor of Tacoma. I went on to serve as President and CEO of the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce.

I won my first election to Congress in November 2020, and was sworn in on January 3, 2021, just three days before the violent January 6 attack on our nation’s capitol and democracy. From day one, I’ve focused on economic security for all by restoring the American Dream.

As a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, I have secured over $50 million for my district to support local jobs, housing, clean water, small businesses, transit, education, and safety. I’m proud of my advocacy for our military members, their families and our Veterans.

I serve as Chief Deputy Whip in the House Democratic Caucus, and hold leadership roles in the New Democrat Coalition, the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC); and as co-chair of the Puget Sound Recovery Caucus, the Grid Innovation Caucus, the Small Brewers Caucus, and the Congressional Caucus for Black Innovation. I’m a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus, the bi-partisan HBCU caucus, and serve as chair of ASPIRE PAC, the political arm of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.
