About Jimmy Gomez

Meet Jimmy

Jimmy Gomez is an educator, renters’ advocate, former union organizer, and now a United States Representative helping lead a new generation of Democrats and delivering results for working families.

Jimmy’s values come from his parents. A proud son of Mexican immigrants, his parents worked long hours just to make ends meet. Jimmy grew up without health insurance, and when he got pneumonia as a child, his family nearly went bankrupt due to the medical bills. Now he’s fighting to pass Medicare for All–so that no one has to go without healthcare.

Right out of high school Jimmy worked at a fast-food restaurant and a local retail store stocking shelves overnight. His experience taught the need for a good job with benefits, and most importantly a quality education. With this newfound clarity, he enrolled in community college, transferred to and graduated from UCLA, and later earned a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Jimmy recognizes that his story, although not unique, is out of reach for too many Angelenos.

Jimmy began his public service as soon as graduated, as an organizer fighting for working families with AFSCME CA and later as an advocate for our front-line nurses with the United Nurses Association of California (UNAC/UHCP). He then ran a grassroots campaign to earn a seat as one of the youngest members of the State Assembly, where he championed Paid Family Leave, environmental justice, and a woman’s right to choose.

President Obama and then Attorney General Kamala Harris hailed Jimmy’s Paid Family Leave bill as the most progressive expansion of Paid Family Leave in the nation. Today, Jimmy is working to make national Paid Family Leave a reality. Jimmy knows that good jobs are only as good as the time people can spend with their family.

Jimmy was elected as United States Representative in 2017, where he stood up to Donald Trump’s relentless attacks on immigrants, education, health care, civil rights, and the environment. When President Biden took office in 2021, Jimmy voted to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, the most comprehensive infrastructure bill in American history, and fought to lower prescription drug prices for senior citizens.

Jimmy is a proven progressive champion of environmental equity, canceling student loan debt, protecting women’s right to choose. He is the only candidate in the race endorsed by the Planned Parenthood Action Fund and the Stonewall Democratic Club because of his strong record on the issues of choice and LGBTQ+ advocacy.

Jimmy was at the table negotiating the American Rescue Act, and helped pass the enhanced and expanded child tax credit payments to families, the Paycheck Protection Program to help small businesses stay open, the Emergency Rental Assistance Program, and funding to help create housing for individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness.

Representative Gomez is a leader in the fight to build more affordable housing, keep people housed and help individuals experiencing homelessness get the services they need. In January 2020, Jimmy led a letter with 64 members of congress to call on President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to prioritize the housing and homelessness crisis, sign an executive order to halt evictions and work with Congress to pass rental relief.

In August of 2021, Jimmy successfully fought to extend the eviction moratorium by protesting on the Capitol steps with Representatives Cori Bush, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Mondaire Jones and Ayanna Pressley. Jimmy knows that activism inspires change.

Jimmy Gomez fights for us – and will never stop advocating for working families.

Jimmy lives in Eagle Rock with his wife Mary and their toddler son, Hodge.
