About Robert Garcia

Meet Robert

My mother brought me to this country and risked everything so I could succeed.

I'm running for Congress so that every kid can have the same shot that she—and this country—gave me.

Robert's Story

Brought to America by his mother, Robert immigrated to the United States when he was a young child. He says becoming a citizen is his proudest moment, and it's the reason he went into public service.

Robert was first elected to Congress in 2022 to represent California’s 42nd District. He now serves as the Top Democratic on the powerful House Oversight Committee, the first sophmore Democrat in more than a 100 years to lead a committee. Robert previously served as Mayor of Long Beach for eight years before coming to Congress.

As Mayor, Robert oversaw a period of unprecedented economic growth and expansion of opportunity for city residents. Robert worked to launch programs like tuition-free community college, a universal basic income pilot and a pandemic recovery package to ensure every Long Beach resident could share in the city’s success. Under his leadership, the city passed an aggressive climate action plan to end the city’s reliance on fossil fuels while protecting and expanding good-paying jobs. He was the first Mayor of Long Beach to have appointed a majority of women to city commissions and boards.

Robert was the first immigrant and first LGBTQ mayor in the city’s history, and is the first LGBTQ immigrant to serve in Congress.

Now in Congress, Robert has remained a steadfast advocate for working class families, our environment and our democracy. In his first three years in office Robert has introduced bills to strengthen environmental protections at our ports, regulate ammunition sales to address the gun violence epidemic, and improve government efficiency to ensure the federal government can better serve the People.

As the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee, Robert is committed to rooting out government corruption and leads the Congressional investigations to hold Donald Trump and his administration accountable. He has also been the driving force in the Congress pushing for the release of the Epstein files and continues to secure the release of more documents related to Epstein’s crimes.

Robert believes this is a time for Americans to step up and make sure we are fighting with everything we have to protect our democracy.
