U.S. Representative – Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District
Majority Whip, U.S. House of Representatives
Tom Emmer is proud to represent the hardworking folks of Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. First elected to Congress in 2014, Tom brings a strong Minnesota work ethic and common-sense leadership to Washington. He currently serves as the House Majority Whip, helping guide key legislation and ensuring that Midwestern voices are heard at the highest levels of government.
A lifelong Minnesotan
Tom was born in 1961, raised in the Twin Cities, and graduated from St. Thomas Academy. He earned a degree in Political Science from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks (yes, it was cold there, too) and his law degree from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul.
Before his congressional service, Tom spent over 20 years as a small business owner, running his own law practice. He also served on the city councils in Independence and Delano, coached hockey, and spent time with his wife, Jacquie, and their seven kids.
Tom served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2004 to 2008, and as a congressman, led the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), helping win back the House majority, and then was elected to be the Majority Whip. As Majority Whip, he now plays a key role in shaping national policy while keeping a close eye on the needs and values of Minnesotans back home.
He and Jacquie have been married for over 30 years and live in Delano.
The party whip counts votes and works to keep party members together on key bills. The whip finds out how members plan to vote, reports that to party leaders, and persuades members to vote with the party.
